  • P10 in Race 1: Secured another strong Top-10 finish amidst fierce junior competition.
  • Miracle Pit Crew Effort: Team successfully replaced a broken gearbox in under 30 minutes following a red-flagged race restart.
  • P13 in Race 2: Fought from a pitlane start with a damaged clutch and popping gears to complete the distance.

A Frustrating Friday

Lewis’s weekend got off to a difficult start on Friday when a throttle body issue sidelined him for an entire practice session. Subsequent sessions were repeatedly halted by red flags, leaving the teenage racer with a mere 15 minutes of green-flag track time in the fourth session to dial in his setup and get primed for qualifying. Despite the severe lack of track time, Turkington remained focused on making his opportunities count when it mattered most.

Qualifying: Two Flying Laps Under Pressure

Saturday morning brought further disruption, as red flags once again severely truncated the qualifying session. Turkington was left with just two flying laps to set a competitive grid position. Showing impressive raw pace under pressure, he secured P11 on the grid from the 29 Juniors, missing out on 2nd position by a microscopic two-tenths of a second.

Race 1 & Race 2: The Ultimate Paddock Rollercoaster

Race 1 (P10): Capitalizing on a clean start, Lewis executed a composed drive in Race 1, learning key racecraft lessons and crossing the line in 10th place for another valuable Top-10 result.

Race 2 Drama & The 30-Minute Miracle (P13): Fired up for a charge in Race 2, disaster struck on the green-flag lap when Lewis suffered a complete gearbox failure off the line. While a retirement seemed inevitable, a major opening-lap incident brought out a red flag, prompting a full race restart.

In an incredible display of skill and determination, Turkington’s pit crew performed a miraculous gearbox swap in under 30 minutes, giving Lewis a lifeline to re-enter the race. Although there wasn’t enough time to replace the damaged clutch—causing the gear lever to pop out on the formation lap—Turkington opted to start from the pitlane. Managing the car with composure, he brought it home to a 13th-place finish.

In Lewis’s Own Words: Reflections on a Bizarre Weekend

“What a rollercoaster of a weekend! On Friday we lost a full session to a throttle body issue, and red flags meant I only had two flying laps in qualifying. P11 wasn’t ideal when two-tenths would have put us P2, but I was glad to secure another top 10 finish in Race 1.

“Race 2 was pure drama. The gearbox failed on the green flag lap, but when a red flag forced a full restart, the team pulled off a miracle and swapped the box in under 30 minutes.  Even thought the car wasn’t perfect, I had thought I would be watching from the grandstands, so to get any racing laps was a pure bonus.  Bringing it home in P13 made me proud of how we managed the situation because we could so easily have just been watching the race from the sidelines.

“I learned a massive amount that will stand by me moving forward. Huge thanks to the team for keeping me on track—I can’t wait for Brands Hatch in August!”
